Last week, the man seen at the heart of efforts to establish anti-Hamas forces - Yasser Abu Shabab - was killed in southern Gaza's Rafah area.

The largest remaining issues are the fate of Tishler and the next Air Force chief, as well as the next defense attache in Washington.

Captain Daniel Perez was murdered during the October 7 massacre. His remains were returned to Israel on October 13, 2025. His father, Rabbi Doron, was recently elected WZO president.

According to the defense minister, the remaining dispute might be resolved in the coming days - though originally he said there would be no resolution before the end of December.

What began as a political alliance has evolved into a deeper fight over control of the IDF, with Netanyahu and Katz pushing changes Zamir views as overreach.

We will not allow Hamas to reestablish itself. We have operational control over extensive parts of the Gaza Strip, and we will remain on those defense lines," Zamir said.

Katz said the IDF is subordinate to decisions of the political echelon, headed by the prime minister, and that the defense minister’s role is to ensure those decisions are implemented.

"Those who preach or encourage refusal will not serve in the IDF and will not be promoted to any position," Katz said.  

Initial IDF assessments indicate that the second Turgeman committee's findings are likely to cause a shakeup within the defense sector, given their critical assessment of the Oct. 7 events.

"We are moving into the next phase regarding the inquiries of October 7th, the phase of integrating the lessons into the IDF’s work plan and implementing them," Zamir said in the release.
