In May 1948, a battered remnant of a people declared a state on a sliver of land no one else wanted. Five regular armies crossed its borders within hours. Twenty more governments wished it were gone.

The statement, which was also signed by Turkey, the UAE, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt, Pakistan, and Indonesia, warned about turning Palestinian emigration into real policy.

A hospital visit offered hope for Arab-Jewish coexistence. A light rail encounter revealed how much hatred still threatens it.

"I turned to get the phone to call the police," the driver recalled. "But suddenly, punches to the head, blows to the right and left until I lost consciousness. I only woke up in the ambulance."

As Israel faces a growing doctor shortage, Arab Israelis now make up 25% of physicians and play an essential role in a health system that also offers a model of coexistence.

"We, the Arab citizens of Israel, are a bridge to achieving peace," Ra'am Party head MK Mansour Abbas said at the conference.

A new survey published Wednesday found that 74% of respondents believe Arab society urgently needs new public figures and leadership, amid political divisions ahead of the Knesset elections.

Camped outside, the women are sleeping in the open air along with hundreds of other Moroccan, sub-Saharan and South Asian migrants.

Israel outlaws all political violence – whether committed by Palestinians or Jews, right-wingers or left-wingers, in the territories or in major cities.

The situation isn’t straightforward, since Israel is still in a state of war. However, that does not change the fact that the Israeli Arabs are not guilty of constituting a danger to the state.
