There are colors that sit in our closets for so long that we barely notice them anymore. Denim blue, navy blue, and sky blue rest there comfortably without asking for much. And then suddenly, a shade of blue appears that is impossible to ignore.

Cobalt blue, a color that makes no apologies for itself, is also known as “Klein blue,” named after the French artist Yves Klein, who developed the intense shade in the 1950s. After many years out of sight, it has made a major comeback this year. In fact, as early as the 2024 season, fashion houses like Loewe and Givenchy featured it on the runway in oversized knits and satin coats - but at the time, these were eye-catching pieces that did not evolve much further. In the 2026 collections, however, it has suddenly become one of the dominant shades.

After seasons of neutral colors and muted tones, the fashion world has decided it’s allowed to be loud - and cobalt blue is the most beautiful shout there is. It appeared on the runways in every possible item: Dresses, coats, shirts, knits - and from there, as always, the path to retail chains was short.

Despite its bold presence, cobalt blue is a surprisingly accessible color. Even with its dominance, it’s easy to incorporate into a wardrobe - after all, it is still blue. The easiest way to introduce it is through knitwear: A cobalt blue sweater is a triple - threat item - it adds color, it’s comfortable, and it works with almost everything in your closet. Pair it with black jeans, for example, or with linen trousers, a skirt, or under a beige trench coat.

You can choose to go all out with the color in a maxi dress, wide satin pants, or a tailored blazer. Of course, it can also shine through accessories: A bag, shoes, or a scarf in this shade will do the job for those who prefer not to commit to a total look.

Cobalt blue works beautifully for both daytime and evening looks, in winter and the transition to spring, for meetings and weekends alike. It has another advantage as well: It flatters a wide range of skin tones, which is significant in a world where many trends suit only certain people.
