Israeli authorities detained the Palestinian Authority's Jerusalem Affairs Minister, Ashraf Hassan Abbas al-Awar, at his home in the Silwan neighborhood in east Jerusalem on Wednesday morning, the PA's official news agency WAFA reported.
Awar was taken for questioning, according to the reports.
The reasoning behind the detention is unclear, and The Jerusalem Post reached out to the IDF and Israel Police for confirmation.
Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa appointed Awar as Jerusalem Affairs Minister in 2024.
Alleged arrest waves in West Bank
According to additional reports by WAFA, the arrest came amid a series of raids in the West Bank cities of Hebron, Nablus, Kalkilya and Tulkarm, where authorities arrested about 30 people.
Palestinian reports claimed that the operations caused material damage to homes and private property, with no clear explanation of the reason behind it.
As of noon, no detailed Israeli statement has been published explaining the reasons for the arrest of Awar or of all the detainees reported by the Palestinian bodies.
