An 18-year-old Haifa resident was arrested following an investigation into threats against the LGBTQ+ community in Haifa and a public figure, Israel Police announced on Tuesday.
Alongside their statement, police shared several social media posts from the suspect, one of which appears to threaten an attack on former prime minister Naftali Bennett, who said he would work towards civil unions and same-sex marriage within Israeli law if elected.
The police launched the investigation after monitoring online activity in coordination with the Tel Aviv District, following threatening posts with intentions of harm and implied death threats ahead of upcoming Pride events scheduled across the country.
The operation found posts threatening a well-known public figure, and additional threats targeting the LGBTQ+ community in Haifa.
Haifa Police investigators, in cooperation with the Bnei Brak station, worked to identify the suspect. They then located, apprehended, and arrested him for questioning before he was jailed.
The police intend to request an extension of his detention at Haifa Magistrate’s Court.
Police Commissioner Levy affirms commitment to Pride Month safety
Israel Police Commissioner Daniel Levy met with representatives of Israel's LGBTQ+ community on Sunday, reaffirming the Israel Police's commitment to ensuring that Pride Month events throughout June are held safely and securely.
Levy said the police would take all necessary measures to ensure Pride Month events proceed without disruption.
Levy added that the Israel Police views the protection of freedom of expression as a core responsibility and has instructed an increase in the number of officers designated to liaise with the LGBTQ+ community.
