US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz is open to commercial traffic, though the United States and Iran continue to trade attacks that have raised concerns over safety on one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
Trump's comments were made during an interview on NBC's Meet the Press, where he was speaking about US Congressman Lindsey Graham, who unexpectedly passed away on Sunday.
"It's open," said Trump when asked about the situation in Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, while adding that he wanted to use the interview to talk about Graham.
"We bombed the hell out of them last night," Trump said, and added that he thought "they [Iran] are very evil and sick people."
"We had a meeting with them, where they agreed to a deal that was perfect for us, with no nuclear, no this, no that, no nothing. They gave up everything. And then, after that, they left the room and within an hour they launched a drone at a ship," he explained.
Thousands of missiles 'locked and loaded,' Trump warns
Trump posted on Truth Social on Saturday that the US had thousands of missiles "locked and loaded, aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands of more to immediately follow, should the Iranian government act on its threat...to assassinate him."
Trump added that "orders have already been given, and the US Military is ready, willing, and able, for a one-year period of time, subject to extension, to completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran."
Iranian regime hardliners, as well as supporters during last week's funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, threatened to assassinate Trump.
Several signs were spotted among the crowds, while people chanted for "death to Trump," "death to Israel," and "death to America," along with other slogans.
