Dozens of haredi (ultra-Orthodox) protesters attempted to block Route 443 in order to prevent the detention of a draft dodger, Israel Police announced on Friday.
According to the police, a 20-year-old had been caught driving a stolen car, after which it was determined that he was also a draft evader.
Shortly after his arrest, the police stated, haredi demonstrators arrived at the scene in order to attempt to block the road.
Footage shared by Israeli media showed protesters sitting on the road in order to prevent vehicles from passing, as well as blocking a police jeep which the draft dodger was reportedly inside.
Protest group refuses to allow draft dodger to be handed to military police
According to N12, the haredi activist group which arranged the protest put out an announcement in which it stated that the draft dodger would not be given over to the military police.
Later, N12 reported that the protesters had begun to disperse.
